The fee is $25 per class.

HOW OKLAHOMA BEGAN is a field trip experience designed for 3rd-grade students in public and private schools.

This program has been designed to complement and support the social studies requirements of grade three as defined by the Oklahoma State Department of Education.

3.3 The student will analyze the significant events and historic personalities contributing to the development of the state of Oklahoma

3.3.6 Describe the migrations, settlements, relocations, and forced removals of American Indians

3.3.8 Distinguish between the points of view of both American Indians and settlers regarding the opening of territories in Oklahoma for settlement

3.3.9 Commemorate statehood Day, November 16, as the joining of Indian and Oklahoma Territories

Activities include

• Participating in an interactive map experience introducing students to the forced movement of Native Americans to Indian Territory and the opening of lands for settlement

• Playing with games and toys children a hundred years ago might have used

• Learning a few Choctaw words

• Using imagination to create a spoon doll

• Exploring museum exhibits

• Dowsing for water when time permits
